About Poetry Tables
Welcome to a book about poetry and the power of Poetry Tables. As the name implies, during a Poetry Table you sit at a table. On the table are a stack of eighty to ninety poems. You sit in a small group and read the poems in silence, setting aside poems that you like. Afterwards, you choose one and read it aloud to your small group and speak about why it matters to you. It is a surprising, intimate, and revealing experience. This book shares profound personal stories and explains how to design Poetry Tables. It is targeted at facilitators, trainers, therapists, and teachers who are looking for a novel way of opening up individuals and groups, and connecting people. The intention is for interested educators, change agents, and interventionists to understand the process, be intrigued enough to want to try it for their team or class, and then either sponsor a Poetry Table or facilitate one themselves.

Profound Experiences
“For poems are not, as people think, simply emotions
(one has emotions early enough)—they are experiences.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
A Poetry Table is a versatile tool that can be used in innumerable settings and contexts. I have facilitated Poetry Tables with all kinds of groups: a classroom of seven-year-old students at a Montessori school; leaders in corporate and community leadership programs; for-profit, non-profit, public benefit, and governmental organizations at all levels; water treatment operators; and construction managers. I have seen the incredible impact reading and talking about poems has had on people and how it has changed lives. In an instant, individuals have had epiphanies and relationships have been transformed.
